Itinerary
🌅 Morning | Shanghai → Hangzhou → Lingyin Temple
🚉 08:00 | Meet Your Guide at Shanghai Hongqiao Station
Your morning begins with ease. Your private guide meets you at Shanghai Hongqiao Station, tickets in hand. No fumbling with machines. No second-guessing the platform. They handle boarding while you settle into your seat—a cup of tea, a window view, and the quiet thrill of what's ahead. ☕
The train accelerates. 300 km/h. The world blurs past—rice fields, small towns, green hills on the horizon. One hour. That's all it takes. 🚄💨
🌿 09:20 | Arrive at Hangzhou East Station
Step off the train. A private driver is already waiting. No queues. No delays. Slide into your comfortable vehicle for a gentle 30-minute transfer through Hangzhou's tree-lined roads. The city unfolds softly—teahouses, willow trees, the first glimpse of distant hills. 🌳
🕯️ 09:50 | Explore Lingyin Temple & Feilai Peak
You arrive before the tour buses. Before the selfie sticks. Before the crowds. 🙏
Welcome to Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) —a 1,700-year-old Buddhist sanctuary nestled among forested hills. Morning incense drifts through ancient halls. Monks move quietly between pavilions. The air carries something sacred. Your guide walks beside you, sharing the history carved into every beam, the legends whispered through centuries, the cultural insights no guidebook captures.
Then, Feilai Peak (飞来峰) —its limestone grottoes covered in Buddhist carvings, over 300 stone statues weathered by time yet still watching, still serene. Trace the details with your eyes. Feel the devotion that shaped stone into spirit. 🪷📸
🍜 Midday | Lunch Near Lingyin Temple
🥢 12:15 | Local Lunch
Your stomach knows it's time. Your guide recommends nearby restaurants loved by locals, not tourists. They assist with ordering authentic Hangzhou dishes—delicate, fresh, subtly flavored.
Think Dongpo Pork (东坡肉) , slow-braised to melting tenderness. West Lake Vinegar Fish (西湖醋鱼) , sweet and tangy, a local treasure. Light broths. Seasonal greens. The flavors of a city that has always understood refinement. 🍚✨
🌊 Afternoon | West Lake — UNESCO World Heritage Site
📜 13:30 | West Lake Cultural Experience
The lake appears. And suddenly, you understand why poets and emperors couldn't stop writing about it. 🏞️
Walk along the willow-draped shores as your guide brings the water to life through stories:🖌️ Su Dongpo — the poet-governor who shaped the lake's very shoreline📜 Bai Juyi — whose verses still hang in the air like morning mist👑 Emperor Kangxi — who left his own calligraphy carved into stone🐍 The Legend of the White Snake — a love story so powerful it broke through realms.
The walking path unfolds at your pace. Pause for photos. Breathe in the view. No rush. 🌿
🛶 Optional Boat Cruise (40 Minutes)
Push off from the shore. The water accepts you. 🚣
Glide across West Lake's glassy surface. The Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) rise from the water—three small pagodas, each holding a candle that, on moonlit nights, reflects back as tiny floating moons. Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔) stands on the far shore, golden in the afternoon light. The Mid-Lake Pavilion (湖心亭) drifts by like a dream.
Timing is everything. Your guide plans the cruise for approximately 15:00–16:00, when the afternoon light is at its most photogenic. Golden hour on water. Bring your camera. Or don't. Some moments are best saved only for memory. 📸🌅
🏮 Late Afternoon | Hefang Street
🛍️ 16:30 | Explore Hefang Street
Step into the living memory of Hangzhou's Southern Song Dynasty past. 🏘️
Hefang Street (河坊街) stretches before you—a historic market street where traditional shops, tea houses, and snack vendors have gathered for centuries. The architecture alone tells stories: carved wooden facades, sloping tile roofs, red lanterns swaying overhead.
Your guide reveals the history woven into these cobblestones. Wander into a tea house to sample Longjing tea (龙井茶) —Hangzhou's most famous export, grown in the hills you can still see on the horizon. Grab a local snack. Browse artisan crafts. Let the street's lively rhythm carry you along. 🍵🛒
🌆 Evening | Return to Shanghai
🚗 17:30 | Transfer to Hangzhou East Station
The afternoon softens into evening. Your private driver returns you to Hangzhou East Station—a smooth 35–40 minute drive through the city's fading light. Watch the day's images replay outside your window: temple halls, lake reflections, old street lanterns. 🌇
🚄 Board Your Evening Train to Shanghai
Your guide handles the boarding one last time. You settle into your seat. The train pulls away. Hangzhou shrinks behind you—but it doesn't leave you.
One hour later, Shanghai's skyline welcomes you back. You step off the train. The day is complete.
One bullet train. Two cities. A thousand years of poetry between them. 🚄🏯🌊✨

Did this tour with my parents (late 60s) and David was wonderful. The high-speed train was comfortable and easy for them — clean seats, smooth ride, no stairs to worry about. David helped with their small bags and made sure they were seated together. The private car in Hangzhou was essential — no walking long distances, no public transport. At Lingyin Temple, David set a gentle pace and found benches when my parents needed a rest. The temple is mostly flat and accessible. Lunch was at a sit-down restaurant with comfortable seating — David helped order mild dishes that suited my parents' preferences. West Lake was beautiful — we didn't do the boat cruise (my mom gets seasick) but the lakeside walk was lovely and David found shady spots with great views. Hefang Street was a hit — flat, lively, and my parents loved the tea shops. David helped my mom buy Longjing tea and my dad find a calligraphy brush. Back to the station with plenty of time — David made sure they were comfortable throughout. This tour works beautifully for older travelers — the private car, the manageable pace, and David's attentiveness made all the difference. Highly recommend for multi-generational travel.

This was the perfect way to experience Hangzhou from Shanghai without the stress of planning. Mei met us at Shanghai Hongqiao Station at 8am and had already collected our tickets. The high-speed train is an experience in itself — smooth, quiet, and you're in Hangzhou in about an hour. Mei used the train ride to give us an overview of Hangzhou's history and the day's itinerary. At Hangzhou East Station, a private driver was waiting. We drove about 30 minutes to Lingyin Temple, arriving around 9:50. Going in the morning was key — the temple was peaceful, the light was soft through the ancient trees, and the crowds hadn't arrived yet. Mei explained the temple's 1,700-year history, the Buddhist symbolism in the architecture, and the significance of Feilai Peak's grotto carvings. The carvings are incredible — hundreds of Buddhist figures carved into the limestone over centuries. After about 90 minutes exploring, we had lunch at a local restaurant Mei recommended — authentic Hangzhou dishes like Dongpo pork and Longjing shrimp. Then West Lake — a UNESCO site and the soul of Hangzhou. We walked along the shoreline while Mei told the stories of Su Dongpo, Bai Juyi, and the Legend of the White Snake. The optional 40-minute boat cruise was absolutely worth it — we passed Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, saw Leifeng Pagoda in the distance, and the afternoon golden light over the water was breathtaking. After the cruise, we visited Hefang Street — a historic market street with tea houses, traditional shops, and local snacks. Mei explained the Southern Song Dynasty context. By 5:30, the driver took us back to the station and Mei got us on the evening train to Shanghai. Tips: book the boat cruise, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a camera — West Lake at golden hour is photography heaven. Mei was outstanding — knowledgeable, warm, and made the logistics invisible.

Solo traveler here — this was the easiest day trip I've ever done. Anna handled everything from the moment we met at Hongqiao Station. The high-speed train is a marvel — I'm not a train person but doing 300km/h in total silence is impressive. Anna sat with me and gave a great overview of what we'd see. The private car in Hangzhou was waiting when we arrived — no figuring out taxis or buses. Lingyin Temple was the spiritual highlight — arriving in the morning when it's quiet and the light filters through the trees was special. Anna explained the Buddhist elements in a way that was accessible without being superficial. The Feilai Peak carvings were fascinating — I would have walked right past them without Anna's guidance. Lunch was at a place Anna recommended — I had Longjing shrimp and it was one of the best meals of my trip. West Lake in the afternoon was stunning — the boat cruise is worth the extra cost. The views of Leifeng Pagoda, the causeways, the willows — it's like a classical Chinese painting come to life. Anna told the White Snake legend and it made the lake feel enchanted. Hefang Street was a fun wander — tea houses, silk shops, street snacks. Anna helped me pick out Longjing tea and made sure I didn't get ripped off. Back to the station, on the train, and in Shanghai before dark. Anna was the perfect solo travel companion — present when I wanted information, respectful when I wanted quiet. Highly recommend for solo travelers.
