Descriptions
🎬 Morning: A Brush with Ancient Canals. Afternoon: Your Close-Up in Old Shanghai.
🌅 Morning | Zhujiajiao — The Venice of Shanghai
1,700 Years. Countless Stories. One Timeless Morning.
Your day begins in the heart of Zhujiajiao, a picturesque canal town often called the "Venice of Shanghai." But this isn't a postcard viewed from a tour bus window. The city's pulse fades with every step deeper into the town. Water laps against ancient stone. The air softens. Time, quite simply, slows down. 🏮
🖌️ Hands-On Calligraphy on a Lacquer Fan
Your cultural journey begins with a brush in hand.
Under the patient guidance of a local master, you'll try your hand at calligraphy—not on paper, but on a beautiful lacquer fan (漆扇) . Feel the bristles meet the surface. Learn the elegant strokes of Chinese characters. Watch as your own hand creates something unexpected: a piece of art you can actually use, a fan that carries both your effort and a centuries-old tradition within its folds. One stroke. Then another. You're not just learning calligraphy. You're writing your own small chapter in a very long story. 🎨
🛶 Private Rowboat Ride
Now, step onto a traditional wooden rowboat (摇橹船) . The boatman's oar dips into green water. The boat glides forward. Above you, centuries-old stone bridges arch against the sky. Along the banks, locals move through their daily rhythms—hanging laundry, tending plants, sipping tea by the water's edge. 🎶
Your boatman hums a local folk tune. The melody drifts across the canal. You pass beneath the shadow of a bridge built before Columbus sailed. This isn't a tourist ride. This is the same water, the same boats, the same songs that have moved through Zhujiajiao for generations. You're not observing life here. You're floating through it. 🌿
🚶 Free Time to Wander
The boat docks. The afternoon hasn't arrived yet. This time is yours.
Slip into hidden alleyways where the tour groups don't go. Find the iconic Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥) —the largest stone arch bridge in the region—and stand at its peak, watching the canals stretch in both directions. Soak in the atmosphere of this living museum, where people still live, cook, and dream within walls that have stood for centuries. No rush. Just the quiet joy of discovery at your own pace. 📸
🍜 Lunch | A Taste of Shanghai
Farm-to-Table. Family-Style. Deeply Local.
Sit down for a meal that tastes like home—if home were a Shanghai kitchen passed down through generations.
The table fills with authentic Benbang cuisine (本帮菜) , Shanghai's signature "red cooking" style. 🥢
🥩 Sweet-and-sour pork ribs, glazed and glistening
🐟 Braised fish, tender and fragrant
🥬 Local greens, simply prepared, impossibly fresh
Every dish carries recipes whispered from grandmother to mother to child. It's hearty. It's flavorful. It's the taste of Shanghai that no guidebook can describe. Eat until you're full. Then eat a little more. 🍚
🎥 Afternoon | Shanghai Film Park — Lights, Camera, Action!
Where Movie Magic Meets History
After lunch, the timeline shifts. You travel back to 1930s Shanghai.
Welcome to the Shanghai Film Park (车墩影视基地) —a working film studio that has served as the backdrop for countless Chinese classics, including Lust, Caution. The streets here don't just look real. They've played real on the silver screen. 🎬
👗 Costume Transformation
Pick your era. Choose your character.
Ladies, slip into an elegant cheongsam (旗袍) , its silk hugging the silhouette of Old Shanghai glamour. Gents, don a distinguished Ming-style robe. The fabric settles on your shoulders. You catch your reflection. Suddenly, you're not a visitor anymore—you're part of the set, a character in a story that began decades before you arrived. 📸✨
🚃 Tram Ride Through Time
Hear it before you see it—the rattle of a replica 1920s tram approaching down "Nanjing Road." Climb aboard. The tram lurches gently forward.
Vintage storefronts slide past your window. Old bank facades. Art Deco buildings frozen in their prime. This is a photographer's dream, every frame a love letter to a bygone era. Click. Click. Click. Your camera won't want to rest. 🎞️
🎭 Behind-the-Scenes Magic
Step deeper into the backlot. Explore outdoor sets that sprawl across eras: from intimate Shikumen alleyways to grand European-style villas, each facade holding secrets.
Your guide walks beside you, sharing insider stories of famous films shot on these very cobblestones. That corner? A legendary director framed his most famous scene there. Those steps? Your favorite actor might have stood exactly where you're standing now. The line between reality and cinema blurs. You're walking through a dream factory. 🏛️
🌆 The Journey Home
As the afternoon light softens, the tram sits quiet. The costumes return to their racks. But you carry something back with you—a lacquer fan painted by your own hand, the echo of a boatman's song, the ghost of a 1930s tram rattling through your memory.
One day. Two worlds. A lifetime of stories. 🏮🎬✨
